How it works
To see SquirrelSave in action, watch the demo.
Client software. After signing up we ask you to download and install your personal SquirrelSave client. The software has its own unique "key" that identifies your PC/laptop to the system at our data centre. Whenever a file is changed or created the software detects that and sends it to your personal storage account on our servers (real time, instant backup).
Data transfer. All data is securely encrypted before being transferred using SSH with 256 bit AES encryption. In order to avoid using too much bandwidth, we also only send the bits of the files that have changed.
Initial upload. The first time you install SquirrelSave it may take quite a long time to upload all your data (up to several days depending on how much data and the speed of your connection). Your personal squirrel will quietly do that in the background, and once the initial upload is complete all your files will be backed up in real-time.
Remote storage. We store your servers at Memset's secure data centres. All the storage servers use RAID(5) which means that if any one disk fails in the server nothing is lost and we simply replace the disk as soon as possible. All your files are kept encrypted on the server (with 256 bit AES) as well so that even if someone were to physically steal the machine they could not access your data without the key.
Time machine. We keep multiple copies of your data on our servers so that even if you delete a file (which will get replicated to the remote server) and don't notice for a couple of days you can still recover it. We normally keep copies on a doubling time scale, ie. 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 8 days, 16 days, 1 month, etc.
Recovering files. You can, at any time, access your data (including historical copies) via the WinSCP client that comes with SquirrelSave. It looks just like Internet Explorer, and is easy-to-use. You launch WinSCP by choosing the View Backups option off the SquirrelSave menu or main window.
